Poverty The Cause And Effects Of Poverty - 1326 Words
Poverty is ââ¬Å"the state or condition of having little or no money, goods, or means of support; condition of being poorâ⬠(Dictionary.com, 2017). Based off this definition poverty is a condition that can cause a cascade of cause and effect actions that is detrimental to families and individuals both physically and mentally. Haan, Kaplan, Camacho (2017) completed a study on the correlation between social and economic status and health in adults in Oakland, CA. They found that the lower the socioeconomic class the higher incidents of diseases and deaths related to chronic diseases (p.1161-1162). Just being without money or little money was not the only indication of health indication, a person living in an area with higher poverty issuesâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Again, just living in poverty areas increases health issues and mortality due to health issues. Children raised in poverty in substandard homes located in high-crime areas have an increased chance of cogniti ve deficiencies, depression, or some other mental disorder (Anakwenze Zuberi, 2013, p. 149). The children are the future; with this being said, an ugly cycle of poverty continues to be reinforced with each generation. Breaking the cycle with community outreach programs, increased mental health awareness, increased employment, and increased educational benefits for those in need are a few things that could potential help. As the old saying goes, ââ¬Å"Give a Man a Fish, and You Feed Him for a Day. Teach a Man To Fish, and You Feed Him for a Lifetimeâ⬠(Author unknown). Unfortunately, there is no right or easy answer for poverty but, I believe education is the key. I attended my 1st Poverty Simulation my Junior year and assumed the role of a single mother with a live-in boyfriend. I was randomly assigned my role and only had the background information contained in the folder to guide my character. There were vendors situated around the room that performed different tasks. There was a police man and a thief that added more stressors to the stimulation. The ââ¬Å"weeksâ⬠were in 15-minute intervals and there was a total of four weeks.
